About the Art
The Warli tribe are mainly located in the Thane District of Maharashtra.The themes chosen by the artists are mainly from nature. Harvest is one of their major themes. The subject found in this painting are fields swaying with healthy crops, cleaning and pounding of the rice grains for consumption within a village setting of birds flying in the sky, the river flowing with abundant fresh water fish, women cooking or busy in their other house chores and children playing. Warli art always contains groups of people indicating that community in the Warli society is very important.
About the Artist
Artist Shantaram Chintya Tumbada, hails from Thane district in Maharashtra. He has had the opportunity to participate in many exhibitions in India and abroad. Shantaram's works include a huge mural on a wall of the six-storeyed Tony Garnier museum in Leon, France.
