About the Art
The forest plays a pivotal role in shaping the Warli culture.The artist choose themes mainly from nature and everyday life, of which marriage is the most important ceremony in the community. The artist Shantaram Tumbada has captured this eloquently in this painting. The bride and bridegroom are found sitting on an animal after completing the wedding rites and crossing the forest to go home. Group dancing, people playing the music, dancing peacocks, women cooking or busy in their other house chores and children playing communicate the importance of community in the Warli society.
About the Artist
Artist Shantaram Chintya Tumbada, hails from Thane district in Maharashtra. He has had the opportunity to participate in many exhibitions in India and abroad. Shantaram's works include a huge mural on a wall of the six-storeyed Tony Garnier museum in Leon, France.
